A celebration
of doing right by you |
The past 100 years have been very exciting! From our very humble beginnings back in 1910, we've passed milestone after milestone to grow into the thriving organisation you see today.
 |
 |
The first fire policy is issued. This policy is still in force today, having insured four generations of a local farming family. |
Doing right by you
We don't believe things happen by chance. Right from the start NFU Mutual set out to provide innovative insurance, providing the quality of cover people need and real value for money - and it still holds true today. In our book, it's what attracts new customers to us and keeps the old one's coming back! |
 |
 |
450 full time Group Secretaries appointed to take care of NFU members' insurances. |
Working from the roots
NFU Mutual has always maintained a local presence in the communities we work in, resisting the trends of so many organisations to centralise all operations.
With over 310 offices throughout the UK, we aim to make sure that it’s as easy to pop into your local branch and talk to us face-to-face, as pick up the phone. Giving you the flexibility to talk to us in the most convenient way. It also means we can keep fully up to date on any local influences which may affect your circumstances and take the necessary steps to underwrite appropriately - and when it comes to making a claim we have the knowledge and the support to deal with it efficiently. |

Product range extended to include Life policies |
Providing sustainable products and services to the community
In fact, today we offer a wide range of products and services to help take care of your world and plan for your future. From farms to families, pensions to your cats and dogs, you know you can rely on NFU Mutual to provide the products and the information you need to make informed choices, and quality that
won’t let you down. |
 |
Nurturing strength
NFU Mutual have always maintained an emphasis on building quality portfolios for the long-term and delivering value for money.
 |
Group income rises to £33.9m and assets hit the £50m mark. |
In so doing, we aim to avoid excessive risk and, even in higher risk asset classes like shares, we err towards higher quality companies.
Our investment experts follow a four-step approach across all the funds we manage.
1. Research
2. Identify and develop long-term strategies
3. Give strategies time to work
4. Prudence
In short, we make sure we’re careful with our customers’ money. And as a result, our finances are in excellent shape for the future.
A recent report from city analysts Cazelet Consulting commented:
NFU Mutual is solidly financed and has a relatively very stable With-Profits fund that is light on onerous guarantees. These strong foundations have provided the Society’s policyholders with enhanced security and material performance benefits including the maturity value promise for those with mortgage endowment contracts. The previous score of 10/10 is maintained. |

Sharing the rewards
 |
Mutual Bonus introduced with £94m being returned to policyholders. |
As a mutual organisation we’re free to share the success of our business with our
customers, rather than shareholders.
We’ve always aimed to keep costs down and prices low to make sure you get good value for money, but in 2000 we also introduced the Mutual Bonus Scheme – providing special loyalty discounts for customers who renew their insurance with us.
It is expected that the overall discounts from bonus payments in 2009 will reach £94 million. Perhaps that’s why around 93% of customers choose to stay with us each year.

Mutual Bonus predicted
to pay back £184m to policyholders |
Looking forward with confidence of the community
Taking time to appreciate our heritage and the successes of our predecessors over the last 100 years is a great honour for us.
But what we’re really looking forward to, is our successors looking back in another 100 years to find this brochure in the archives and a whole new string of achievements, growth and milestones to reflect on.
So, we plan to keep doing what we do, and do it well! And look forward to sharing our future with the generations to come. |
