Below you will find profiles of the members of our NFU Mutual board of directors.
Richard Percy was appointed to the Board in June 2003 and appointed Chairman in January 2012. He has farmed in Hertfordshire for over 25 years. Richard also runs an agricultural consultancy business and is a Director of Apsley Developments Limited. He is also a Council Member of the NFU of England and Wales. Until 2009 Richard was a member of the Board of the Environment Agency and of its Pension Committee.
David Anderson was appointed to the Board in June 2010. David has extensive experience in financial services and was previously Chief Executive of Co-operative Financial services which includes the CIS insurance business and Chief Executive of Yorkshire Building Society. He has worked in the civil service as Chief Executive of Jobcentreplus and served as a member of HM Treasury's financial inclusion task force, as Chairman of the Building Societies Association and as a member of the executive committee of the Council of Mortgage Lenders. Currently Chair of the think tank Mutuo which aims to promote all forms of mutual ownership.
Kim Arif was appointed to the Board in January 2007. Kim is the Group’s Finance Director; his responsibilities include Group Finance, Investments, Properties, Life Actuarial, Procurement, Group Business Risk, Compliance and Audit. Kim is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. He joined the Group in 1990 in Life Actuarial and joined the General Management team in 2001. Kim attended the Harvard Advanced Management Programme in 2006.
Steve Bower was appointed to the Board in July 2010. Steve has been NFU Mutual’s Customer Services Director since April 2009; his responsibilities include General Insurance Underwriting and Claims, Life Services, Reinsurance, Customer Service Operations and the Regional Service Centres. Steve has been with NFU Mutual for over 20 years and has held a variety of roles, including Sales Manager, Regional Manager and Chief Manager Life Services.
John Elliot was appointed to the Board in January 2009. He has farmed in Oxfordshire for over 30 years and runs a farm and estate management business. The enterprises include combinable crops, dairy, beef, sheep and commercial shoots. John has a number of property interests in the UK and overseas. He is a qualified accountant and has been a director of United Oil Seeds Marketing Limited since 2003.
Beverley Hodson was appointed to the Board in July 2008. She is a Director of Randstad and was previously a director of Legal & General Group, M & G Investments, First Milk and iForce. Beverley is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of Women in Advertising & Communications London. She was awarded an O.B.E. for services to retail in 2003.
Chris Ide was appointed to the Board in January 2010. He is an actuary and has spent his entire career in the insurance industry. Chris is currently Chairman of Exeter Friendly Society. He was previously Chief Executive of Swiss Life (UK), Managing Director, Europe of Swiss Life in Zurich and Chief Executive of Royal London’s retail business. Chris is also a Trustee of the Scout Association, a Governor of Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance and a Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Actuaries.
Ian Leech was appointed to the board in October 2010. Ian is NFU Mutual’s Sales and Agency Director. His remit is to focus on sustainable, profitable growth and development of both the Life and General Insurance sides of the business as well as building continued development of the Agency Network. Ian’s previous roles with NFU Mutual include General Manager Sales and Assistant General Manager Life. He joined NFU Mutual in 2001 after a career of 20 years at Axa Sun Life.
Jim McLaren was appointed to the board of Directors in January 2012. Jim served as President of NFU Scotland from 2007 until 2011, having served previously as the organisation's Milk Committee Chairman before becoming Vice President in 2006. He is Chairman of Quality Meat Scotland, the red meat levy body in Scotland, a non-executive director of Scottish Agricultural Colleges and a founding director of Angus Cereals, a farmer owned grain co-operative. Jim is a mixed beef and arable farmer from Perthshire in central Scotland.
Chris Stooke was appointed to the Board in July 2011. Chris has extensive experience in the insurance industry, having held the position of Chief Financial Officer of Catlin Group from 2003 to 2009. He is a Chartered Accountant and held a number of practice and management positions at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Chris is a non-executive director of Chaucer Syndicates Limited, Chairman of Miles Smith Limited and a Trustee and Member of Council of the Royal School of Needlework. He is also a non-executive director at King's College Hospital.
Lindsay Sinclair was appointed Group Chief Executive on 1 November 2008. Prior to joining NFU Mutual he was CEO of ING Direct, having returned to the UK in 2002 to create the business. Over the last 25 years Lindsay has also run retail businesses around the world for Barclays, ING and Standard Chartered (including bancassurance together with AIG across South East Asia). Lindsay is also a Board member of the Association of Financial Mutuals and the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation and sits on the General Insurance Committee of the Association of British Insurers.
Mark Tinsley was appointed to the Board in July 2006. He farms in South Lincolnshire growing arable and vegetable crops. Mark is Chair of Nene Potatoes Limited, Chairman of the Commercial Farmers Group, a Director of Holbeach Marsh Cooperative Limited and Winters Lane Storage Limited. He was previously Chairman of the Oxford Farming Conference Council, the NFU Pesticides Working Group and the Assured Produce scheme and a member of the Commission reporting on Farming and Food, a Sustainable Future.
