The rise of Farm Stays in the UK

Farm stays in the UK
All countryside breaks promise fresh air and unspoilt views - but farm stays allow you to get even closer to the true heart of country life.

A farm stay ultimately involves spending your holiday on a working farm – either in an adjoining cottage or sometimes in the farmhouse itself.

Break

Farm stays in the UK are steadily increasing in popularity, and have even led to the generation of a new holiday genre – ‘agri-tourism’.

It’s not difficult to see the appeal of a farm stay in the UK. The chance to live and breathe rural life, enjoy the scenery and the wide open spaces, all while getting a fascinating insight into life as a farmer in the modern age.

Of course, there’s also the lure of top class rural accommodation (many farm stays offer five-star lodgings) and the added bonus of a relatively low-budget holiday in comparison to jetting off abroad.

But farm stays can also offer educational benefit. As most breaks are on fully working farms (with very friendly owners), you’ll often be given the chance to look round or even help. What better way to introduce your children to the animal kingdom than by feeding the pigs or collecting eggs from the hens?*

You can also find out about milking, lambing and other seasonal farming activities depending on the time of your visit.

The beauty of a farm stay in the UK though, is that you can do as much or as little as you wish. So if you’d rather just use your farm lodging as a base and head out to local attractions instead, that’s fine too.

One thing not to be missed, though, is the famous farmhouse breakfast. Freshly laid eggs, farm-reared bacon and sausage – often enjoyed in the company of the farm owners themselves.

Farm Stay UK

Farm Stay UK is the organisation behind most farm stays in the UK, and a keen promoter of newly coined ‘agri-tourism’.

The organisation offers more than 1,200 places to stay throughout the country, all searchable by facilities and accommodation on the Farm Stay website.

Not all farms are suitable for small children, but you can use the website to find farm accommodation that’s child-friendly.

All that remains then is to make your booking, dig your wellies out, and prepare for some family fun on the farm.
