True cost of…a wedding

True cost of a wedding
It’s the happiest day of your life – and it’s usually the most expensive. Wedding day costs keep rising year on year.

But exactly how much does it cost to get married? Here we look at the true cost of traditional weddings and offer some advice on how best to plan the finances for your big day.

The average wedding

While all weddings are unique in their own way, typical wedding costs are estimated at around £15,000. With an extravagant reception and exotic honeymoon, that price can easily be doubled.

It can be very easy to under-estimate the cost of your wedding, with many of the smaller elements costing more than you might expect. The typical cost of wedding invitations, for example, is £300, while the average wedding cake costs £350. Depending on the number of guests you have at your wedding, this figure can rise upwards of £500.

Flowers are another considerable expense, with the bride’s bouquet costing as much as £100 on its own.

Certain items, such as the rings and bride’s dress, vary greatly in cost from wedding to wedding – and spending less in these areas can drastically reduce the overall bill.

Much depends on the mindset of the bride in question though – spend more on the dress as it’s such a special occasion, or spend less as you’ll likely only wear it once?

Dealing with the costs

Arrow

Decide your wedding budget in advance - and stick to it. Keep a spreadsheet which shows what you’ve spent and what’s left to pay for. Placing orders on an ad-hoc basis quickly sees the costs add up, and could leave you with a nasty surprise when the final bill is totalled up.

Arrow

Compare prices and collect quotes for everything, from dresses to flowers to churches. Naturally there will be some items you won’t want to compromise on, but even in these instances a little research may help you save money.

Arrow

Plan out your big day from start to finish, including all the minor details such as how people will get from one venue to another. Being well organised will help you keep your finances in order, and means you won’t incur any unexpected extra costs at the last minute.

Arrow

If you’re trying to cut costs, you may want to consider a late afternoon wedding. Food takes up a considerable amount of most wedding budgets, so not having to provide a lunchtime reception can be a weight off your shoulders.

Arrow

As soon as you set a date, start saving. While you may have to make sacrifices in the run up to your wedding, it’s better than starting married life under the strain of debt.
