Planning your retirement

Or if you started a while ago...

You need to review your plans. Your life and circumstances are likely to have changed since you first started paying into your pension. You might have bought a property, moved house, had a family, got married (or divorced), taken a break from work – any number of things in fact. So you need to re-look at how much you’re contributing.

If you’re still paying in a similar amount as you were 5, 10 or even 20 years ago, are you sure you’re contributing enough to get the retirement you want? Could you afford to save more?

Think about it; if you pay into a pension monthly and you’re aged 40 now, there could be only 240 months left until you retire – and if you’re over 50, there could be less than 100. That’s not all that many more chances left to put something by.

So, by reviewing your retirement plans now, you’ll:

  • Help to ensure you don’t have to continue working beyond retirement age
  • Have peace of mind knowing that you’re on track for the kind of retirement you want

The basic State Pension for the 07/08 tax year is just £87.30 a week for single people and £139.60 for couples. Even when you add other state benefits that could be available to you, it still may not be enough to maintain your standard of living. So now is the time to start planning for your future.
