If I'm affected by the Icelandic volcano, will my travel insurance cover me?

Some insurance companies are saying they will not cover costs because they class the volcanic eruption as a natural disaster.

Travel delays following the eruption of the volcano in Iceland are not covered under NFU Mutual's travel insurance. However, NFU Mutual have decided to provide cover as a gesture of goodwill as we always aim to treat our customers fairly.

We will pay increased benefits of compensation under the Delayed Departure cover due to the exceptional circumstances for customers stranded abroad, £50 for the first 12 hours, £40 per 12 hours after that, up to a maximum of £250 per person. We will also pay costs incurred up to £1000 per person for customers who have been unable to fly out of the UK and have had to re-book or cancel.

To be valid, however, all travel insurance policies must have been purchased before the announcement of an eruption. If your flight was booked before you knew of air space closure we will pay claims under the policy. As with all insurance policies, you are unable to insure for an event or incident after it has happened so when you know of an air space closure and still book a flight claims will not be valid.
