Ten Home Essentials

Because everyone needs somewhere to relax

As our lives become busier and busier, we’re all looking for a place to relax, kick back and enjoy our favourite pastimes.

In other words, we all need a fortress of solitude; a place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whatever you decide to call it, this is the place to store all of your technology and gadgets and it has to be just right.

Your place of retreat needs to be comfortable, it needs the right accessories and it needs to be a little slice of you! After all, it’s your fortress of solitude! So, here are our top 10 essentials:

1. The right décor - If this is your place to relax, then you want to make sure that the environment you are in meets that need. From minimalist simplicity to themes around your passions and hobbies, you need to get this right. If you’re starting out, lists are your friend! Pinterest boards are also a great idea to help you visualise your fortress! Top tip: if you’re unsure about colour matching, speak to your local DIY store or decorator.

2. Router - You’ll probably want internet access, especially if you’re planning on kicking back with Netflix or a games console. Make sure you do a bit of research before you buy so you can find a router that suits your needs.

3. Wireless speakers - Music is known for its ability to soothe and inspire. So treating your ears to top quality sound is really important. There’s a huge range of speakers available no matter your budget. Check out consumer champion Which? to find out what might work best for you.

4. Comfortable seating - Are you sitting comfortably? Now, this is going to be critical. Remember, you’re here to relax. Britain has a fantastic heritage in furniture manufacture and you can find manufacturers online with a huge range of options to suit you.

5. Scalextric So this is a personal preference of mine, and there are plenty of alternatives to Scalextric such as remote control vehicles, train sets or robots. If this is your bag, before splashing out on any collectable of epic proportion there are two challenges to consider:

  • Do you have the space?
  • Is scalextric the right choice?

If space is a problem then there are MicroScalextrics sets available which suit smaller spaces.

6. Games console - You may not be a gamer but the latest generation of games consoles come with Blu-ray drives and software that support a wide variety of internet apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. If you want Ultra HD capabilities in your fortress of solitude, a game console is a must!

7. Table Top Games - If space and budget aren’t a problem then go big - think foosball, air hockey or a pool table. For the more modest fortress then jigsaws and board games are a great way to challenge yourself while you unwind.

8. A media player - The world of digital TV has changed dramatically in the last 30 years. From the introduction of satellite in the late 1980’s to the streaming revolution brought about by super-fast broadband.

9. A TV - You’ve got the games console and the media player, now you need something to watch everything on. Available in a dizzy array of sizes and formats and with 4K, Ultra HD and internet connectivity to consider, you’ll need to figure out what’s right for you.

10. Home Insurance - If you’re going to invest in a wide variety of new tech and gadgets for your retreat then making sure that you have appropriate contents insurance. Things can go wrong, from accidental damage to fire or burglary. Having the right cover gives you peace of mind, but it also means that your belongings will be replaced should they be lost, stolen or damaged.
