NFU Mutual - Company heritage
Then
The foundations of NFU Mutual go back further than you might think.
Stratford upon Avon and District Farmers Union was formed in April 1909 and was to prove to be of historic importance to agriculture.
During its infancy, seven local farmers launched a scheme to entice new members to the Union by offering insurance at cost price. The plan worked well, and by 1910 the Midlands Farmers Mutual Insurance Society Ltd came into being - the farmhouse of Union member JR Black providing the first office.
Now
Since the opening of the first office, NFU Mutual has grown from strength to strength. To this day we are still expanding.
We began insuring individuals and business outside of the farming industry in the 1980's and they have now overtaken farmers as our largest group of customers.
Offering our products to those outside of farming has seen our growth accelerate -
enabling us to become one of the UK 's top ten general insurers. We are one of few providers whose range of products extends to investments, pensions, life assurance, finance and risk management.
