If your car requires repairs following an accident we’ll provide a small courtesy car in the UK while they are being carried out by our approved repairers or up to 14 days if written off or stolen.

What isn't included:
- Breakdowns outside the UK, within ¼ mile from home or recovery distance greater than 20 miles.
- Any excess, which is the amount you’ll need to pay towards a claim. Your policy documents will outline where these apply.
- Loss of value over time, damage to tyres and wear and tear.
- Replacement of keys and locks if keys are lost.
- Personal possessions not kept in a locked vehicle, boot or glove compartment.
- Cash, tickets, stamps and cheques.
*You must advise us of the uninsured driver’s details, make, model and registration of the vehicle and details of any independent witnesses. We will deduct excesses and reduce no claims discount until satisfied the uninsured driver is at fault.
**Excludes motorhomes, campervans and any vehicle with a gross weight of 3500kg or over or a length greater than 5.5 metres.

Frequently asked questions
Car insurance is a legal requirement in the UK. Unless your car is SORN’d, you must at least have third-party only car insurance – this still applies if you don’t drive the car and keep it parked on a road, driveway or garage.
We provide three types of car insurance: comprehensive, third-party fire and theft, and third-party only cover.
A third party policy covers damages to others in the event of an accident. All drivers are legally required to have at least third party car insurance.
Third party fire and theft cover includes everything a standard third party only policy does, but it also protects you from loss in the event of fire damage and/or the theft of your vehicle.
Comprehensive is the highest level of cover you can choose. This covers others (third parties) involved in an accident, but most importantly damage to your vehicle, whether the accident was your fault or not.
It’s important to keep in mind that not every comprehensive car insurance policy is the same and insurers include different benefits as part of the cover they offer. Some may require you to pay extra for features that we include as standard – and excesses differ too.
We provide benefits such as our Mutual Assist Breakdown Cover, provided by the RAC, and Motor Legal Protection as standard as part of our Car Insurance policies.
To get a car insurance quote you need at least a provisional driving licence. You’ll also need to know the registration number of the vehicle(s) you are looking to insure. It doesn’t matter whether you have bought the car or not, we can still provide a quote. We’ll also need to know of any modifications that have been made to the vehicle.
To help us provide you with a quote as quickly as possible, we’ll also need to know how you intend to use the car e.g. commuting or business and where you will keep the car overnight. If you already have car insurance from another provider, it might be helpful to have your policy documentation in front of you as you go through a quote with us. Details of your No Claims Discount may help to lower your quote.
We don't charge for paying monthly, which means you'll pay the same amount for a car insurance policy from us whether you pay monthly or annually.
A No Claims Discount is a percentage discount that will be applied to your quote based on how many years you have held car insurance without making a claim.
We apply a No Claims Discount as follows:
● One year without a claim: 30%
● Two years without a claim: 40%
● Three years without a claim: 50%
● Four years without a claim: 60%
● Five years without a claim: 65%
● Six years without a claim: 66%
● Seven or more years without a claim: 67%
The No Claims Discount that is applied to your policy at renewal will be reduced in the event of any claims that are made during the policy term. We can explain how your No Claims Discount will be affected by any claims you might have made at renewal, or you can find a breakdown of this in your Car Insurance Reference Booklet [PDF].
Our Car Insurance provides cover when driving in most European countries, as standard. The countries that you are able to drive in while abroad under our Car Insurance are listed in the Policy Reference Booklet.
Not all insurers provide cover while driving abroad as standard, so it’s best to check this when getting a quote. You can compare our policy against other providers using Defaqto’s Car Insurance Comparison Tool.

If you are involved in a car accident you should follow the law; stop to see whether anyone is injured or whether any vehicles or property is damaged. You should provide your (or the vehicle owner’s) name, address and insurance details to anyone with good reason to need them. If anyone was injured in the accident or you were not able to exchange details at the scene you should report the accident to the police within 24 hours.
You should report the accident to your insurer as soon as possible. Do not wait until you have your policy number or all the information about the incident. To help with the claims process don't apologise or accept responsibility, even if you think that you may be to blame.

You should notify us immediately if your vehicle has been involved in an incident with an uninsured driver. In this situation, with our Car Insurance your No Claims Discount is protected, and you won’t pay any excess.
You must inform us of the uninsured driver’s details, the make, model and registration of the vehicle, and details of any independent witnesses. We will deduct excesses and reduce your No Claims Discount until we are satisfied the uninsured driver is at fault.
You can make changes to your Car Insurance policy for no extra charge. Either contact Mutual Direct or your local agency office – wherever you bought your policy from. You can find out where you purchased your policy from on the front page of your policy schedule.

Yes, you can insure multiple cars at the same time on one NFU Mutual policy.
Our Car Insurance includes Mutual Assist breakdown cover from the RAC as standard. Mutual Assist breakdown cover provides roadside assistance for breakdowns more than a quarter of a mile from your home and where the total recovery distance is under 20 miles, misfuelling cover, local recovery and a small hire care for 48 hours.
You can increase the level of breakdown cover by upgrading to our National Assist breakdown cover which includes recovery of the vehicle, driver and passengers to any UK destination, alternative travel or overnight accommodation for £19.99 per year. Your breakdown cover can be further enhanced with National plus Home Assist to include assistance at or within a quarter of a mile of your home for £34.99.
We don’t charge cancellation fees if you decide that you don’t want your Car Insurance after the standard 14-day cooling off period.
Industry-wide, car insurance premiums fluctuate each year for many different reasons. Some factors result in increased premiums whilst others help to bring down the price quoted.
We recalculate your individual car insurance premiums annually at renewal and take many different factors into consideration. The price a customer pays is a combination of all of them. Some of these factors include age, where someone lives and whether they’ve previously made a claim. Other factors are caused by external influences, such as national levels of vehicle theft and fraudulent claims, and tax changes - these all affect the cost of car insurance for everyone.
