Country Crime Fighters Awards 2013

Overview

The Country Crime Fighters Awards is a nationwide competition run by NFU Mutual to celebrate and reward fantastic examples of crime prevention taking place in the countryside. Whether it’s the recession, tighter security in towns, or the rise in oil, meat and scrap metal prices, countryside people are feeling the blight of rural crime on their land. However, country people are not taking this scourge lying down. Across the country new security initiatives are springing up involving rural communities.

The aim of the Awards is to find the UK’s best and most dedicated rural crime fighters whose actions have made the biggest difference to their local neighbourhoods.

  • Entries should be submitted online by midnight on 31/05/2013.
  • Our authoritative panel of judges will evaluate all entries before announcing the overall winners on 14/06/2013.

Four Award categories with cash prizes of £1,000 up for grabs to help fund anti-crime initiatives.

Please ensure you
read the competition Terms and Conditions detailed further down this page before you enter.

“As the UK's leading rural insurer and part of the fabric of country life, we have a responsibility to offer continued support to rural communities in their on-going fight against crime.

"To celebrate the resourceful, inventive, yet often unrecognised individuals and communities who take an active stance against rural crime, we are proud to launch the NFU Mutual Country Crime Fighters Awards 2013.

"Be it a member of the public, anti-crime group, local policeman or one of our own Agents, this competition aims to celebrate and reward fantastic examples of crime prevention activity taking place in the countryside.

"I am thrilled to be involved in the judging panel for this competition, and cannot wait to start uncovering the UK’s unsung rural heroes.”

Gordon Roach receiving his award

Mr Roach successfully set up the Winstone Neighbourhood Watch and was rewarded for his continued involvement in local crime reduction activity. Community Scheme Award

Winner: Wear and Tees Farm Watch, County Durham

Farm Watch receiving their award

Members of the Wear and Tees Farm Watch use a ring round system to alert each other to suspicious activity and provide regular patrols of the local area in conjunction with local constabularies. The scheme has assisted over 20 prosecutions, and in one operation alone helped recover over £40,000 of stolen property. The scheme continues to boost morale in the Wear and Tees area, with local butchers even providing cost price dinners before patrols so that members can eat together as a community.

Local Bobby Award

Winner: Special Constable Susan Holliday and Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Tracy Watt, Brampton, Carlisle

Local Bobby winners

The two police officers have implemented Farm Watch schemes in the Brampton area, and worked on a quad bike tagging programme for farmers, which led to several stolen quads being recovered locally and across the UK.

NFU Mutual Agent Award

Winner: Paul Bennett, Bridport
