DLF Seeds

'Working together to maintain a safe environment'

DLF Seeds is the world’s largest producer and distributor of grass seed and is involved in research and breeding programmes for both turf and forage.

NFU Mutual Risk Management Services has been working with DLF Seeds since 2014 providing health and safety consultancy across its four UK sites.

Evita Van Gestel, NFU Mutual senior health and safety consultant, explained that key risks for businesses in this industry typically include workplace transport, control of hazardous substances, managing dusts, slips/trips and falls, and warehousing risks, including storage of materials in stacked crates and on racking.

She said: “It’s a real pleasure working with DLF Seeds because they are so committed to providing a safe working environment for their staff.

"We have been working together to develop safe working procedures for their staff (which includes a number of foreign language speakers), as well as conducting a workplace transport risk assessment, creating a bespoke health and safety employee handbook, carrying out dust and noise monitoring, conducting fire risk assessments and providing training, such as risk assessment and COSHH awareness.

"We look at these risks but we are also keen to work on aspects which our client wants us to - this means our service is shaped to assist with what they see as their priorities.”

Martin Swinnerton, DLF Seeds Director of Operation UK, said: "DLF Seeds use both NFU Mutual for insurance and Risk Management Services for health and safety consultancy - we see this as a one stop shop across our entire UK business.

"The benefits for DLF are that our insurer knows that we are complying with current legislation and being advised by professionals in their field who have experience from many other sectors. This synergy means that we are all working together to maintain a safe environment for our employees."
