Local financial services provider NFU Mutual Wrexham is delighted to be supporting Leonie Saffy and her pony Jack as they set their sights on representing Team GB at the Paralympics.
Leonie is a Wrexham-based dressage rider who last year returned to training following extensive spinal surgery at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.
Born with Escobar Syndrome and Arthrogryposis, Leonie suffered damage to her muscles and joints as a baby, leading her to develop restrictive lung disease, sleep apnea, heart damage and neuromuscular scoliosis (curvature of the spine).
Leonie took up horse riding five years ago at the Clwyd Special Riding School in Llanfynydd to help strengthen her spine. Since then, she has turned her passion for dressage into a profession, representing Great Britain at Bishop Burton as the youngest Grade 2 para rider, and winning the British Dressage Silver Summer National Championships in 2016.
Other achievements include British Dressage Talent Spotting Junior Champion 2015, RDA Grade 2 Freestyle National Class Champion 2015 & 2016, RDA Grade 2 Championship Junior Champion 2015, and RDA Grade 2 Championship Class Champion 2016. She was awarded Welsh Para Rider of the Year in 2016.
Mark Roberts, Senior Partner at NFU Mutual Wrexham said: ‘It has been a privilege to meet Leonie and her beautiful pony Jack and we’re excited to be supporting them as they take on their next round of competitions. Leonie is an inspiration – overcoming challenges with bravery and determination while remaining focussed and positive. We very much look forward to sharing in their continued journey and wish them all the very best for the 2018/19 season.”
Leonie’s next national competition is the Equissage Pulse Para Silver Championships which take place in Solihull at the beginning of September.
Leonie’s Dad Jason who is horsebox driver and her Mum Zara, who acts as groom, and many other things in her support of her superstar daughter said: “Leonie would ride seven days a week if she could but at the moment we’re juggling training and her GCSE exams. She’s done amazingly well to recover from her recent surgery and her and Jack have come back stronger than ever. Her ultimate dream is to represent Team GB at the Paralympics and support like this from NFU Mutual Wrexham will help her in training even harder to achieve that goal.”
