Comprehensive Breakdown Cover

Breakdown support provided by the RAC

We're committed to keeping you on the road, that's why our car insurance includes RAC breakdown cover as standard.

For our car insurance customers, we offer three levels of breakdown cover to best suit your needs. Our basic level of cover is included with all Car Insurance policies and includes accidental mis-fuelling, local recovery and a small hire car for 48 hours.

For extra peace of mind, you can choose to upgrade your breakdown cover to ensure that whenever and wherever you need breakdown support, the RAC will be on hand to get you back on the road.

Upgrade to National plus Home Assist, our highest level of breakdown cover and benefit from key features such as: 

  • Home breakdown assistance - at, or within, 1/4 mile of your home
  • Roadside recovery - if your vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside, recovery of your vehicle, driver and passengers to any UK destination
  • Exclusive rates for NFU Mutual insurance customers
  • Personal service provided to all our customers by the dedicated NFU Mutual breakdown helpline team.

If you have a Light Goods Vehicle policy with us for your Light Commercial Vehicle, then breakdown cover is not automatically included as standard. Please refer to your policy documents to check whether you chose to add National Assist.

Frequently asked questions

To support customers during the Coronavirus pandemic, since 22nd May 2020 we provided more than 600,000 car and light goods vehicle (LGV) customers with additional 'at home' or 'national recovery' UK breakdown cover from our partner, the RAC, at no extra cost. This is in addition to the ‘Mutual Assist’ breakdown cover our car insurance customers already receive as standard. 

We did this to make sure our customers who were key workers were able to get where they needed, safe in the knowledge that if they broke down, we’d be on hand to help get them back on the road. We also wanted to support customers who were experiencing issues starting their vehicles at home due to less frequent driving during the national lockdowns. For many of our customers who live in remote areas of the countryside without access to a nearby garage, this support has been a lifeline. 

Since May 2020, we’re proud to say that over 8,000 customers have benefitted from the enhanced service in their time of need.  

We worked hard with our partners at the RAC to keep extending this complimentary upgrade as the country experienced successive lockdowns and regional restrictions. Now as restrictions begin to lift, from 1st July 2021, we’ll be returning our customers’ breakdown cover to the level they had before the pandemic.

If you have a car insurance policy with us, you will have, at a minimum, Mutual Assist breakdown cover which is included as standard on all car policies. Please refer to your policy documents to check whether you chose to add National Assist.  

If you have an LGV insurance policy with us, cover is not included as standard. Please refer to your policy documents to check whether you chose to add National Assist.

At the end of June, we contacted all customers directly to ensure they were aware that our breakdown cover offer was coming to an end on 30th June 2021.

This communication detailed that we would be returning customers’ breakdown cover to the level they had before the pandemic, and that they could find out exactly what cover they have in the ‘Road Rescue’ section of their latest policy schedule. 

We also provided information about how to upgrade their level of cover if they wished to.
