What to do if you think you have been targeted by cyber criminals
Being targeted by scammers is, unfortunately, something which happens often in today’s society. Whether it’s online or on the phone, fraudsters are actively looking to extract personal information which they can use for their own benefit.
‘Phishing’ emails are one tactic used by cyber criminals. According to Action Fraud, ‘phishing’ is a form of online fraud that involves sending an email to an individual posing as a company or brand they recognise and attempting to convince the recipient to either hand over valuable personal details or money, or download something that infects their computer.
This type of fraud can also be carried out through other channels such as over the phone (known as ‘vishing’) or by text message (known as ‘smishing’).
It’s important you safeguard yourself as much as possible and there are steps you can take to protect yourself……..
How to deal with a ‘phishing’ email
- Don’t transfer any funds or pay any money as the email instructs – you should never be asked to pay via a link or an attachment
- Don’t reply to the email with your details
- Don’t open any links or documents
- Check with the company the email claims to be from by phoning them directly using the phone number found on their official website and ask them if the email came from them
- Remember to delete any scam emails straightaway
- Report the activity to the company it was impersonating so they can investigate the source
How to deal with a ‘vishing’ phone call
- Be aware of unsolicited calls
- Never reveal your password, login details or account numbers over the phone – you should never be asked for your pin, or for a whole security number or password
- Terminate the call as quickly as possible
- Always report the activity to the company it was impersonating
