Support your local farm shop

Your nearest farm shop is often a Christmas one-stop shop.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, farmers and growers have overcome a wide range of challenges to ensure the nation is fed with delicious, nutritious food. It’s been far from easy, requiring long hours on the farm, relentless dedication and good old-fashioned hard work to keep fresh produce flowing into our supply chain and our fridges and larders well-stocked.

Many have also had to cope with a reduced workforce due to self-isolation requirements, along with other unexpected difficulties such as transport issues and cashflow disruption.

In addition, as pubs, caterers and major restaurant chains have closed, farmers have lost some of their usual income streams. Despite this, they have continued to supply the nation with fresh produce during these unprecedented times and, although faced with these challenges, have helped the most vulnerable in their communities to access food – which is often rural areas. So, how do we even begin to say thank you to our hardworking farming community?

Christmas is the perfect time to support our farmers and growers and thank them for their efforts during the Covid-19 crisis. Why not help your local farm shop by buying some key ingredients from them for the big day?

Not only will you be supporting your local community, you’re also likely to notice a difference in taste; local produce will not have travelled as far as food from other sources, so is more sustainable and better for the environment.

One such farm shop catering for both the local area and online shoppers is the Rhug Estate in North Wales, and it can act like a ‘one stop shop’ for those preparing for Christmas.

Lord Newborough took over the family farm in 1998 and, as well as the farm shop, Rhug now offers customers drive-thru and takeaway food options, as well as the newly-opened ‘Café Rhug’. The farm shop has more than 3,000 hand-selected products which showcase local, artisan and organic food, drink and gifts.

New for this Christmas is Rhug’s Wild Beauty skin and body care collections. The collection is created using many of the beneficial ingredients that are foraged and hand-picked from around Rhug Estate, including yarrow and elderflower.

In the run-up to Christmas, shoppers can also buy bespoke, luxury food and drink gift hampers. Rhug Estate pride themselves on the high-quality organic meat they produce. Their organic turkeys enjoy almost seven months living free-range on the farm, fed organic oats and enjoy a stress-free life. These birds produce the highest quality meat and Rhug’s Dee Valley Bronze Organic turkey won a Great Taste 2019 Award. They also rear organic beef, lamb, bison, chicken, goose, and game when in season.

Farms such as Rhug will be helping all of us put great quality food on the table this Christmas, so make sure you support your local farm shop.
